Yoga for Manolo Feet

July 10, 2009

Regular readers will know that I love Susi Hately Aldous – she is totally the Anatomy Goddess. Take that however you choose.

Herewith a tidbit I found on Flickr, for those of us who still like to wear our skyscraper heels from time to time. I tried a fantastic pair on today. Campers. Patent. Aqua.

Didn’t buy them. I am saving for Mark Whitwell’s retreat in Fiji. Great self-control, I say. But these stretches will help with the after-effects of my other shoes. Oh yes.

Yoga for the Sole – As part of Susi Hately Aldous’ extensive training program a common problem she often addresses with her clients and students is the pain experienced as a result of walking in stilettos and heels all day. Some women claim they cannot live without their 4 inch heels and as a result they are seeking effective ways to combat the pain experienced at the end of the day or night.

Susi offers a few simple yoga tips for those of us who are not willing to let go of the Manolo’s but would like to put an end to the pain often felt at the balls of our feet, in our calves, and even in our backs and hips (resulting in bad posture). Please see attached photo for two simple foot stretches Susi recommends to help alleviate pain associated with wearing high heels.

Susi explains that “the soreness we feel after a day in heels has much to do with the short term muscular fatigue. Over the long term this soreness can lead to adaptive change. By using specific stretches and massages you can reverse the impact of a day of heel wearing.”
Susi is available to address and recommend a series of techniques and yoga moves (incl. standing calf stretch, foot massage with hands, calf massage with hands, toe massage, sitting on heels, etc.) that can be practiced after kicking off the heels.

I love doing that in class and my students HATE IT!

and are you REALLY doing Mark’s retreat in Fiji? You made me swear A LOT when I read that! ;)

If I wasn’t going to India in January I would be right there with ya, girlfriend! uh, actually pushing you out of the way so I can sit up front….:)

I am so NOT a stilettos girl! I sort of wish I was because they do make you walk sexy. I have one pair of shoes with high[ish] wedge heels and it’s all I can do to stay on them. If I lived some where warm I would wear bare feet all year round.

I reckon yoga for the feet would help any one, whether they wear high heels or not. I’m sure my feet hold tension, just like my shoulders, neck, stomach, hands, etc…

Oh, my … Fiji and yoga … how will you cope with all the sunshine, warmth, and yoga loving goodness?

I do wonder at the apparent ease some ladies have with walking in high heels. I had no idea they could be so uncomfortable. How different the world might be if Germaine burned her Manolos instead of her bra.
