Yogini Desiree Jones doin’ the Wild Thing!
Wild Thing Pose. Also known as ‘flipping the dog’. I love it: I love the openness. I love how it feels, and looks, super flashy, but is actually not that hard.
Yes, I KNOW I shouldn’t care about Flashy Sh*t. I know. But sometimes a girl just wants to feel graceful and brave, you know?
I’ve seen it taught several ways: coming into it from Downward Dog, which I teach & practice, (stay tuned for a vinyasa I put together for June’s Australian Yoga Life).
You can also come into it from Plank Pose or Side Plank, which is more challenging to the core. I teach and practice it this way too.
I saw this beautiful picture of a yogini I know (I used to teach her in South Africa) and it reminded me how much I love this pose, and the grace of yoga.
What makes you feel graceful? Is it asana or do breathing and meditation practices help you into a state of grace more easily?

Light Up Your Life

Thanks for this darlink! I brought Wild Thing to my little class last night and told them that it was just for fun – to play, explore and enjoy. It was a very nice way to bring smiles to everyone’s faces.
I just learned about entering wild thing from side plank! I was actually really confused at first because it was presented to me as a “moving on” option from side plank. I was like, “But you are putting the second foot down? WTF?” And then I realized I should maybe be less caught up in what is difficult or not or “advanced” or not and just do wild thing in a way that’s actually easier for me at home. (I practice in sort of a narrow space and so need to guage whether or not I have room to flip. This is sometimes quite difficult for me to estimate when I’m upside down in down dog but is much easier for me to visualize from side plank. Less crashing into the couch and the closet door this way.)
I love this one too. I’ve heard it called ‘rock star’ as well, I’m reluctant to use that word in the yoga realm anymore! Epic photo….! Acts of kindness and having a big hearty genuine laugh brings some connection with grace during the day but I can’t really decide between asana/pranayama and meditation with respect to what makes me feel more graceful, it varies so much from day to day.
Darling Nadine, you made my day! Thank you.
Big hugs to you,
Desiree
Oh, that beautiful picture made MY day, Desiree! And Linda? I’d call you Wild Thing anyway
