This is an interview with yogini Melita Mollohan. I asked her to do it after watching the video below. Melita and I have been Facebook and online friends for a while, and we have similar views, so I was delighted when she agreed to do this interview!
How did you come to yoga? And what made you want to teach it?
i’m a motorcycle riding yogini that has been dabbling in yoga before i realized it was called “yoga.” i’m a fairly flexible person so i wanted to make sure that i wasn’t going to hurt myself so i started taking yoga in a class room setting in my early 20′s. yoga helped me get out of my head and into my body. it allowed me to accept myself and truly love myself for who i am. yoga taught me how to respond versus reacting, and that’s huge!! i suppose it’s true when they say that we teach what we most need to learn.
i wanted to share this transformative practice of yoga with others. i have learned that our greatest teacher is within but in order to hear the teacher within us, we have to learn how to be still and listen.
I know you and I share similar views on what the physical practice of yoga can do for mental and emotional wellbeing: could you elaborate a bit?
i truly believe that yoga is for everyBODY. even if you can’t do fancy asanas (or will never be able to do fancy asanas) who cares?! it’s taking time for yourself, moving your body in an organic way and getting out of that crazy busy mind of yours. that’s healing! our bodies were made to move. and yoga helps you to open in new ways that you never even knew existed. while it opens the body, more importantly, it opens the mind. yoga helps you become more aware of what’s going on with you and what’s going on with the world around you.
What does a typical day look like for you?
i’m a bowen therapist (which originated in australia) as well as a yoga teacher. a typical day starts with my morning sadhana with me waking up getting some pet love (my boyfriend & i have 2 dogs – a greyhound and a miniature pincher/rat terrier and 3 cats), making some fresh juice and doing a little yoga. then i go see my bowen clients & teach private yoga sessions in my office and then off to teach yoga at a local studio. i try to spend my evening relaxing with my boyfriend & pets and a mug of hot tea.
And lastly, where DID you get those pants (from the video)?
bahahaha, my “hot pants” as they are lovingly referred to are made by a local yogini who’s been doing tie-dye since before i was born! she obviously does an amazing job!
