Anna Guest-Jelley: Curvy Yoga

Yoga teacher Anna Guest-Jelley is the powerhouse behind Curvy Yoga. That’s right, yoga for people who think they are too curvy to do yoga.

Of course, most of us believe we aren’t ‘right’ for a yoga practice.

Not flexible enough, too old, too uncoordinated, too curvy, whatever. Body image is a fluid, and sometimes tricky, thing.

That’s why I wanted to feature these people who look like normal people (like I do). To show that no matter who you are, if you find the right yoga teacher, you can enjoy and benefit from yoga.

I recently bought Anna’s book, Curvy Yoga, and loved it so much I asked to join her affiliate program so I could share the curvy love! I also asked her what advice SHE’D give her younger self.

Anna Guest-Jelley’s advice to her younger self:

When I think of what to tell my younger self, I find myself thinking “how much younger?” Should I go back to when I likely first started dieting — around age 8? Or should I stay more recent — even up to just a year ago?

Interestingly, the advice is shockingly similar no matter the age, if not exactly the same. I’d tell myself, whether 8 or 30, that I am moving forward toward the life I imagine. It’s coming. In fact, it’s already here in lots of ways — the people coming into her life, the lessons she’s learning, the bittersweet dichotomy of life’s challenges and triumphs.

And, of course, I’d spend a good amount of time listening as she weeped about her body image struggles. I’d stroke her hair and let her know — it’s not about the weight. Allow yourself to feel. Open up. Fear is the problem and vulnerability is the antidote.

I’ve spent so much of my life guarded against the next real or imagined catastrophe that I didn’t have as much fun as I could have, or love as deeply as I could have — especially myself. So I’d also spend a lot of time holding her hand and repeating one mantra over and over: “You can let go; you are enough.” “You can let go. You are enough.”

I would grab that 8 or 30 year old by the hand and take her for a drive with the windows down, sunroof up and music blazing. We would celebrate how incredibly blessed our life is. And as we came home, we would repeat together, voices joining and then getting progressively louder, hands raised to the sky:

“I can let go; I am enough.” “I can let go; I am enough.”

Finally. That’s all I am saying.

I, as you all know, have an Ass on me (a big butt, not a donkey. Just clarifying) and I have struggled with body dysmorphia for most of my life.

If you saw my post on Monday, you’d have seen MY younger self. I was so THIN (for me – I stopped menstruating around the time of that sad photo). But all I could think about was how fatfatat I was. So sad. Such a waste of emotional energy.

Yoga is meant to be inclusive, but there is a strong physical culture around it that can make it intimidating and judgemental, especially for people who feel like they don’t have the right bodies. And lots of teachers don’t know how to teach yoga to people whose bodies…well…curveThis book solves all that.

What I was most taken aback by, was that for the $25 Anna charges for her basic book, you get so much information. I cannot imagine how long and hard she must have worked on this. A photo and instructions for more than 60 poses! Plus 15 videos! It’s such good value it’s laughable. Plus, it’s beautifully designed. Which always tips the balance for me.

Also, as an added bonus, because I just love Anna’s book so much, if you buy it, I will throw in a copy of my yogAttitude downloadable DVD for FREE!

It’s worth an extra $14.99, so you get $40 of value for just $25.

I like to take care of my people :)

If you have the book, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it too xx

This is so great! I bought a video series (yes, video!) years ago called “Yoga for Round Bodies” which I cherished so much, I got it transferred (imperfectly) to DVD.

This is a really important and under-paid-attention-to area in yoga. Yay to you both!

Thank you and warm wishes from a curvy yogette in Brooklyn.

    Alice
Ps. So if I click to Anna’s page to buy the ebook, Nadine’s DVD gets automatically thrown in?
